On December 24, 2010, Mylan Inc. agreed to pay $65 million to settle lawsuits brought about by the state of Texas and the federal government over Medicaid reimbursement paid to pharmacies and individual healthcare providers.

Mylan Inc. is a generic and specialty pharmaceutical company founded in 1961. Headquartered in Pennsylvania and initially a distribution company, Mylan received approval to begin manufacturing penicillin G tablets in 1966. Maxzide, their first invented drug, received approval for treating hypertension in 1984, and was the first new drug to be patented by a manufacturer of generic drugs. According to the IMS National Prescription Audit, Mylan had become the most dispensed line of pharmaceuticals in America by 1995.

According to Bloomberg, Mylan has been sued by 18 states since 2003, according to the company’s 2009 report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
