AstraZeneca’s cancer drug, Vandetanib, has recently been linked to substantial toxicity according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Vandetanib is an experimental drug designed to treat thyroid cancer, and has been linked to serious side effects in 31% of patients, compared with 13% of those taking a placebo pill. According to Bloomberg, a panel of outside advisors to the FDA will review the findings on December 2, 2010, at the agency’s headquarters. Once-daily Vandetanib tablets have helped patients live 54% longer without their disease worsening in a 331-person study reported in June.
"A substantial number of patients receiving Vandetanib required a dose reduction and/or interruption" during the key study, FDA staff said in their review.
Approximately 45,000 people will be diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2011.
